국문 초록 (Abstract)

Jong Soung Kimm(1935- ), who has taken a leading role in the modern architecture of Korea after Joong Eop Kim(1922-88) and Swoo Geun Kim(1931-86), has constantly established his own architectural style. After returning from the U.S.A. in 1978, he designed a number of distinguished buildings with the concept of ‘Tectonic Logic and Spatial Imagination’ that he developed. Among his works, Kimm’s architectural concept of exhibition space design seems to be initiated by the philosophy of Mies van der Rohe(1886-69) whose idea laid in ‘Universal Space or Open Plan’ from later in the currier of Mies, and influenced by Louis I. Kahn, Josep Lluis Sert and I.M. Pei’s exhibition space composition.
This study will examine Jong Soung Kimm’s most distinguished museum buildings: Museum of Art Seoul National University(1984-91), Artsonje Museum(1987-91) and Seoul Museum of History(1987-98, 2002) and will focus on 1) the rationale of exhibition space programming and design, 2) the skylight as a natural light resource in the exhibition space, and 3) simplicity & elegance in space design through those example projects by researching actual buildings and records.
In summary, the characteristics of Museum Architecture by Jong Soung Kimm are as follows:1) Floor plans are designed with a concept of "Centrality": exhibition spaces are composed of either small-to-large sequences or a row of consecutive unit spaces. 2) In order to introduce natural light into a space, a series of 1/4 cylinder-shaped ceilings / roofs was designed, effectively and sensuously expanding users' experience of the space. Also it appears to be helpful for a visitor to stay long in the museum and visit again. 3) A concise expression of structure and the selection of natural exterior material made it possible for him to develop contributions to the modern Korean architectural style.
